In Raleigh: The
Wolfpack had its most successful campaign in history and this class will keep
the optimism high. Ive long referenced Frank Beasley as being one of the elite
recruiters in college wrestling. No matter what school hes been at, Beasley has
recruited above expectations. This #1 class should put a bow on that
distinction.
Why Theyre Here: Five
Top 100 recruits including elite talents in Reenan and Hidlay. With them and the
Bullards, the back half of the line-up is set for years. And Im high on Tariq
Wilson, this years Ironman Champ, who projects well as a force in the college
lightweights. When all is said and done, NC State may have gotten seven starters
in one single class. The future stability of the program will hearken back to
this class.
Needs for Next Year: As
good as the Wolfpacks season was, it may surprise you that they only graduate
two starters (Gantt and Gwiazdowski). Watch for Boykin to bump up to HWT for a
couple years before Rogers takes over and with Reenan and the Bullards in tow,
youre seeing that the only needs in the back have for the foreseeable future is
at 197 and thats IF Malik McDonald isnt serviceable.
The haul also included good lightweight prospects. In addition to Wilson, who I
consider a sure-fire starter, there are several talents here. Depending on how
they develop, I expect The Pack to focus on blue chippers at 125 and 141.
Flashback Stat: In
2011, P.P. (pre-Popolizio) NC State had the 6th ranked recruiting class. But not
one member of that group, headlined by Ohios Chris Phillips, made it on the
roster more than a season.

Vinnie Monseau:
Well, we just got word that my Dad, the Coach, scored dual meet wins number 398
and 399 tonight as he lead Magnolia High's wrestlers. Now for the "full circle"
moment... His next duals are Saturday against Linsly and (wait for it ....) Weir
High. My Dad graduated from Weir in 1958 and played on their 1957 WV state
champion football team. He was exposed to the sport of wrestling at Weir High
and coached there in the early 70's, now he will attempt win number 400 or 401
against his alma mater. Those of you that know him won't be surprised that he
will be happy to simply see growth and increased maturity of character in this
team, just as he did for the previous 47 years he has coached wrestling. He will
also be quick to thank my Mom, his wife for 49 yrs, for her enduring tolerance
and encouragement. As this 400th win approaches, I know that the number means
nothing in comparison to the mentor this man is to so many of us. Truly, his
mission has been to inspire others to their own successes, and stand back as we
(not he) take the podium for our moments. God has used this Coach and his wife
to let us know that wrestling, like other extra-curriculars, is a means to make
and grow relationships. The results, whether wins OR losses, only make the bonds
tighter. So, good luck, Dad. Go get #400 with all honor and respect. It's time
for all Monseau wrestling alumni, old and young, to "circle the wagons". Our
Coach, "Cool V" himself, is at it again. May God continue to bless him.

Stephen Shaffer -- "Lifetime
Service to Wrestling"
Stephen Shaffer graduated in 1968 from Brockway Area High School in Brockway,
PA. Then he attended the College of the Ozarks and transferred to West Liberty
State College and graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education and Language
Arts. In 1980, he received his Master's in School Administration from the
University of Detroit. Stephen taught 5th grade at Madison School in Ohio County
for 12 years before moving to teach Language Arts and Shop at Wheeling Park
High.
Coach Shaffer began coaching wrestling as an assistant to Coach Buzz Evans.
During his coaching career, he helped Wheeling Park win 3 State Tournaments and
5 OVAC Championships. He took pride in helping the young athletes develop into
mature, responsible, and dedicated young men while accomplishing their athletic
goals.
From 1998 through 2000, Stephen served a dual role in coaching when he was the
assistant coach of the Wheeling Park girls basketball team, during which time he
helped in winning 2 State Basketball Championships. In 2003, he was awarded the
Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year. From his coaching start, Stephen has
helped with the running of the OVAC Wrestling Tournament. His greatest
accomplishment is his creation of the Wheeling Park Duals which he began in 1990
and directed for 25 years. This is one of the largest Dual Meet Tournaments in
the country. The tournament has hosted over 97 different teams over the last 25
years and at one point had 40 teams competing. He retired from teaching in 2007
and from coaching in 2015.
Stephen resides in Wheeling with his wife, Mary Ellen. They have 4 children:
Shane Shaffer, Shannon Tamburin, Stephanie O'Donnell and Samantha McQuaid. Nine
grandchildren complete the family.
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame honors Stephen Shaffer with a "Ufetime
Service to Wrestling" award, class of 201S.
Death Valley Wrestling Program
Steubenville grade school students.... Tuesday, Nov 3rd will be the first practice for the Death Valley Wrestling Program..... Ages are 5yrs old to 6th graders. Practice will run 6pm - 7:30pm down on 3rd street at the new building next to High School..... We look forward to seeing new faces along with last years kids. If you can't make it, then Nov 5th will be next practice at same time......come down sign up, get those kids off of the Xbox and into something that will teach them discipline and release all their energy.

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame, West Virginia Chapter, cordially invites
