2013-2014 WLU WRESTLING SEASON PREVIEW
125—Zach Brown (R-FR) or Bryce Gainer (R-FR)
This wrestle-off should be an exciting one between two redshirt freshmen with
bright futures on the Hilltop. Brown was a WV small school state champ as a HS
senior in 2012, while Gainer was a runner-up in WV’s big school state tournament
that same year. The pair met three times during their HS careers, with Brown
winning twice and Gainer winning once.
133—Dillon Nolte (JR) or Joe Wagstaff (R-JR)
With last year’s starting 133 lber. Cole Nace growing out of this weight class
over the summer, the door has opened here for two former starters. Wagstaff, a
starter at 125 lbs. the past two seasons, has also grown and will make the jump
to 133. Nolte, who started at 133 lbs. two seasons ago and placed 6th at the
regional tournament, will not compete during the first semester, as he completes
his internship for his degree. Nolte will rejoin the team in January and compete
for a spot here.
141—Johnny McComas (R-SO) or Cole Nace (SO)
As will be the case at 125 lbs., this should be an exciting wrestle-off. Nace
was the starter at 133 lbs. last season as a true freshman, and saw a lot of
success placing at the Mt. Union and Waynesburg tournaments, and winning 15
matches. McComas was the starter at 141 lbs., struggling through an injury
plagued season that saw him competing in 14 matches. Both were place winners in
the always tough Ohio state tournament as high schoolers, with McComas placing
twice.
149—Art Hobley (R-JR)
Hobley was a national qualifier last season at 157 lbs., and will look to make
the drop back down to 149 lbs. this year. A regional runner-up last season at
157, Hobley competed at 149 lbs. his freshman season. Hobley currently has 42
wins in his two seasons in the black and gold singlet, and is looking for bigger
and better things this season.
149/157—Daniel Carpenter (SO), Gage Deem (FR),
and Cody Walker (FR)
Carpenter was pulled off his redshirt last year to fill in for an injured
McComas at 141 lbs. When McComas returned to the line-up and Carpenter could no
longer make 41 lbs., Carpenter ended up filling in at 149 and 157 for the
Hilltoppers when starters at
those weights suffered injuries during the ‘Toppers injury plagued season. In
the role of a ‘utility man’ filling in wherever needed, Carpenter managed to
earn seven wins and a runner-up finish at the Mt. Union tournament. Deem and
Walker will more than likely be redshirted.
157—David Schlieper (R-SO), Bryan Skoff (R-SR),
and DeMadre Turner (R-FR)
There will be plenty of good competition and good depth at this weight class.
Schlieper, a former WV HS state champion, saw varsity action in 20 matches last
season, and according to Coach Davis, has plenty of potential to be a great
college wrestler. Skoff transferred to WLU from D3 powerhouse Mt. Union, where
he was a two year starter for the Purple Raiders. He hasn’t competed in two
years, but looks to return strong for his final year of
eligibility. The scrappy Turner progressed and developed in the practice room
during his redshirt season last year and should also challenge for a spot at
this weight class.
165/174—Eric Antesberger (SO), Isaiah Baker (FR), Andy Church
(R-SR), Mike Emery (R-JR), Scott Kaiser (R-SO), and
Jordon Nolan (R-SO)
Who will compete at which weight class in this area will not be determined till
after wrestle-offs. The frontrunners here are probably Nolan and Emery. Nolan
missed last season due to a concussion. He was released and brought back second
semester,
but after competing in two matches and going 2-0, his concussion symptoms
returned. As a result, Nolan was forced to take a medical redshirt. In
2011-2012, after transferring from Ohio University, Nolan—a former 3X WV state
champion—found
a starting spot for the ‘Toppers at 165 lbs. and enjoyed a great freshman
campaign, defeating two opponents that would later become D2 All-Americans that
season (Travis McKillop of UPJ & Mason True of Findlay). Emery was on his way to
an outstanding
season last year as a starter at 165 lbs. before suffering a season ending
injury going into the second semester. He was 7-4 prior to his injury, with one
of those wins over Waynesburg’s D3 national qualifier Sam Guidi. Emery was also
one match away from
placing at the prestigious Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, going 3-2 at that
event. Antesberger will provide strong competition for a spot in this area, as
will returners Church and Kaiser. Filling in for an injured Emery last year,
Antesberger saw action in twelve matches…winning half of those matches and
placing 6th in a strong field at the Ohio Northern tournament. Church and Kaiser
both have seen limited varsity action and will provide strong depth in this
area. Baker, a 2013 VA state champion, will more than likely be redshirted.
184/197—Joe Congie (R-FR), Nate Dawson (FR), Danny Doyle
(R-JR), Jesse Roman (FR), Doug Sizemore (R-FR),
and RJ Waugh (FR)
Doyle transferred to West Liberty in the fall of 2011 and was forced to sit out
a year due to the NCAA’s 2X transfer rule. Prior to that, he spent a year and
one semester wrestling at Belmont-Abbey where he suffered a season ending injury
early in his redshirt frosh season and was awarded a medical redshirt. He left
B-A and spent the spring 2011 semester at Ohio University, where he did not
wrestle, before landing at West Liberty. After a slow start last season as WLU’s
starting 197 lber. due to a two year
break from competition, Doyle had a highly successful second semester. Doyle’s
second semester record was 15-11 (overall record 16-19), as he placed 6th at the
regional tournament. He will probably start the season at 197 and may make the
drop to 184 second semester. Wherever Doyle isn’t, there will be plenty of great
competition for the other spot, as Coach Davis has brought in plenty of great
young athletes in this area the past two seasons. Coming off solid redshirt
freshman seasons are Congie and Sizemore. Both improved in the room last year
and should
provide good competition at 184/197. Sizemore is a former VA HS state runner-up.
Davis also brought in an impressive recruiting class in this area with two WV
state champions in Dawson and Roman, and an Ohio state placer in Waugh.
285—Aaron Silverio (R-SO) and Anthoney Verhovec (FR)
After spending two years in the room as a workout partner for 2012 All-American
JD Ramsey and 2013 National Qualifier/Regional Champion Mike Carpenter, Coach
Davis is excited to watch the young Silverio compete as the regular starter for
the Hilltoppers. Having learned from Ramsey and Carpenter, and given his
physical attributes (he is big, strong, and aggressive—a former all-Ohio lineman
during his HS football days), Silverio is expected to make an immediate impact
in the heavyweight class. Verhovec is a freshman who won 145 matches in HS in
Ohio, and will be redshirted.

Alderson Broaddus Wrestling Announces 2013-14 Schedule
PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- The Alderson Broaddus wrestling program announced its 2013-14
schedule Monday. AB's slate includes five home duals and a marquee visit to
College Park, Md., to face Division I University of Maryland on Nov. 3.
"This is a very good schedule for our first year," said Head Coach Mitch Smith.
"We have many home matches so that the campus and community can come out and
enjoy college wrestling. I am very excited to get this program off the ground
and heading in the right direction."
The Battlers open the season with wrestle offs on Oct. 27 at Rex Pyles Arena and
then travel to face the Terrapins.
"This is a great opportunity and honor for our program to be able to wrestle
Maryland," said Smith. "Many DII programs never get the chance to wrestle DI
opponents in a dual, but for us to be able to wrestle Maryland a top 25 team in
the country is amazing for our first competition. I would like to thank
Maryland's Head Coach Kerry McCoy a former two-time Olympian and two-time NCAA
Champion for giving our program this opportunity."
AB visits Washington, Pa., on Nov. 9 for the Washington and Jefferson College
Invitational and then travel to Ripley, W.Va., Nov. 19 to take on West Virginia
University Tech.
After a meet featuring Lake Erie College, Ashland University and the University
of Indianapolis in Lake Erie, Ohio, on Nov. 23 the Battlers host Wheeling Jesuit
University in its first home dual of the season.
The blue and gold participate in the Newberry Duals on Dec. 7 and travel to
Waynesburg, Pa., on Jan. 4 for the Waynesburg University Invitational.
AB takes on West Liberty University on Jan. 14 before returning home to face the
University of Pitt-Johnstown on Jan. 18.
The Battlers make three more road trips to the West Virginia Collegiate Open
(Jan. 25), Mercyhurst University (Jan. 29) and Seton Hill University (Feb. 8).
King University visits Philippi, W.Va., on Feb. 1 in one of AB's three remaining
home duals. Home duals against Ohio Valley University (Feb. 13) and Waynesburg
(Feb. 19) round out the schedule.

Forfeits No Longer Affect Wrestler’s One-day Limit
Effective with the 2013-14 season, forfeits in high school wrestling will no
longer count toward a wrestler’s daily match limit. Currently, wrestlers are
limited by rule to five matches in one day.
This change in Rule 1-4-2 was one of five rules changes made by the National
Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee
at its April 8-10 meeting in Indianapolis. The changes were subsequently
approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
“The limit on the number of matches permitted in any one calendar day was
established as a safeguard to prevent any wrestler from undo fatigue, thus
increasing the possibility of injury,” said Dale Pleimann, chair of the NFHS
Wrestling Rules Committee and former assistant executive director of the
Missouri State High School Activities Association. “Since there is no fatigue
or exertion involved with accepting a forfeit, the committee felt that it was
not necessary to count forfeits in the match total for any wrestler.”
In other revisions, the committee altered Rules 1-1-4 and 10-1-2 to allow the
use of electronic devices for video recording and review by the wrestler or
coach unless prohibited by the state high school association. Also, the use of
electronic devices that enables communication between a coach and athlete
during a match is still prohibited (Rule 4-3-6).
In Rule 4-5 regarding weigh-ins, the committee approved a new article
concerning wrestlers who have been approved to wear an artificial limb. Rule
4-5-9 states that the wrestler must weigh-in with the artificial limb if he or
she chooses to wrestle with it on. In addition, once the wrestler has weighed
in while wearing the artificial limb, it cannot be removed during competition.
With these revisions, competitors who have been approved by their state
associations to wear an artificial limb have the option to wear or not to wear
the artificial limb during competition, but must weigh-in accordingly.
“The concern was that if a wrestler weighed-in with an artificial limb (and)
then decided to remove the artificial limb for the match, the wrestler’s
weight without the artificial limb might not qualify the wrestler for that
weight class,” Pleimann said. “The changes require that if the wrestler
weighs-in with an artificial limb, then the wrestler shall wear the artificial
limb when competing.”
The committee approved an addition to Rule 5-1-1 that allows for bad time if a
wrestler is not given the choice of position after a two-point stalling
penalty. In addition, Rule 6-6-2d was approved and adds “after a two-point
stalling penalty” as an instance when an error occurs in positioning wrestlers
that would result in canceled points during bad time.
In other revisions approved by the committee, Rule 4-2-1 states that starting
with the 2014-15 season, if a hair cover is worn by a wrestler, it shall be
attached to the ear guards. The intent of this rule change is to help maintain
continuous action during competition.
“The Rules Committee feels that the sport of high school wrestling is in very
good shape and, therefore, made only a few minor changes to the rules for the
2013-14 season,” Pleimann said.
Wrestling is the sixth-most popular sport for boys at the high school level
with 272,149 participants in 10,407 schools during the 2011-12 season,
according to the NFHS Athletics Participation Survey. In addition, 8,235 girls
were involved in wrestling in 1,441 high schools.
This press release was written by Taylor Wilkerson, a 2013 spring intern in
the NFHS Publications Department. He is a junior at Franklin (Indiana) College
studying broadcast journalism and public relations.

Steubenville native Shawn McGhee named MSC Wrestling
Freshman of the Year
By Chris Megginson / Campbellsville University Sports Information
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University's Shawn McGhee was named the
Mid-South Conference Wrestling Freshman of the Year this past week after
finishing the 2012-2013 season as an NAIA All-American. The award was selected
by coaches' vote across the MSC.
McGhee, a native of Steubenville, Ohio, finished the season with a 20-9 record
and placed fourth as an All-American at the NAIA Championships for 149 pounds.
His finish helped lead Campbellsville to a sixth-place team finish at the NAIA
Championships, March 1-2.
"Shawn had a great year, and is very deserving of this honor. I'm happy for him
and hope to see him become a national champion and four-time All-American. He's
off to a great start," said CU head coach Franky James.
McGhee was also named All-Mid-South Conference Honorable Mention. The All-MSC
Team and honorable mention selections were awarded based of how individuals
finished at the NAIA East Region Qualifier Tournament. Those with the
highest-place finish were named All-MSC, while those who were second-highest
were honorable mention. McGhee advanced to the NAIA East final against teammate
Kyle Terry, and forfeited his position to Terry.
While at Steubenville High School, McGhee won two Ohio Valley Athletic
Conference championships and was named the OVAC Most Outstanding Wrestler in
2012. He was one of eight Big Red wrestlers on the 2012 team that placed fifth
at the Ohio Division II Wrestling Championships. He placed fourth as a senior at
145 pounds and finished his career with 130 wins. McGhee chose Campbellsville
over NCAA Division I program Ohio University.
Other Campbellsville All-MSC Honorable Mention selections were Tyler Alsip (133
pounds), Chris Teague (141 pounds) and Allen Scruggs (197 pounds). All-MSC First
Team selections were Brandon Westerman (141 pounds), Kyle Terry (149 pounds) and
Conor Young (157 pounds).
The MSC Wrestler of the Year award went to Lindsey Wilson College's Jameel
Bryant, who won the national title at 184 pounds, while Lindsey Wilson's Corey
Ruff and Cumberland's Todd Allen were named the Mid-South's co-Coaches of the
Year.
Also announced recently were the MSC Academic All-Conference honors, presented
to sophomores or higher with a 3.25 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale. Campbellsville
student-athletes receiving the award were Josh Ashbrook, DeCoreus Leavell, Colby
Rinehart and Joe Whalen.

Petition to Save Olympic Wrestling 2020
Wrestling dropped for the 2020 Olympics!!!
1. High school participation has grown by over 40,000 over the past decade
2. 95 new college wrestling teams (at all levels) have been established since
1999
3. Wrestling is the 6th most popular high school boys sport with over 272,000
participants
4. There are now over 8,200 young women who wrestle in high schools and we have
21 intercollegiate women's wrestling teams
5. The 2012 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships sold an unprecedented 112,000
tickets and wrestling is among the top 5 NCAA revenue producing championships (4
consecutive sellouts)
6. Wrestling is one of the original Olympic sports and has been included in all
but one Olympic competition since 1896. Only four other sports -- track and
field, cycling, gymnastics and swimming -- have been in more Games.
7. There is no doubt that a strong Olympic wrestling team is helpful in our
efforts to increase participation at the grass roots, high school, and college
levels. Young wrestlers need to be able to dream of being an Olympic Champion as
they develop. For this reason, we will fully support USA Wrestling’s efforts to
make sure wrestling remains as an Olympic sport.

WHEELING JESUIT UNIVERSITY
We
welcome you to follow the building of the program at https://twitter.com/WJUWrestling.
You will get a closer look at the details involved with the building of a
program from the ground up. From the development of the wrestling room,
wrestling mat design, singlet creation, equipment designs, the building of a
schedule, recruiting progress and much more, friends of the program will see it
all.
This is a very exciting time and we have had a number of recruits on campus in
just the first few weeks of recruiting. Individuals from West Virginia,
Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania have already made their way to campus,
and in the coming months we will be putting together the first recruiting class
in Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling history.
Spread the word and follow us at the link above. Have a great week!
Thanks,
Coach Doyle
Brian Brakeman to retire!
A NOTE FROM BRIAN BRAKEMAN
After more than 40 years and well over 3,000 pages, it seems time to draw the
curtain on the Brakeman Report. It has been a labor of (mostly) love, but its
objective from the start--identifying and forecasting the participants in the
state meet--has been rendered unnecessary by the explosion of data and data
analysts on the Internet. It is a decision, I make with some misgivings since I
have always enjoyed the process which lead up to the report. Still, it will now
be the first January since 1971 that I will be able to really enjoy without the
specter of hard-to-make deadlines.
It has been a privilege to work with the various constituencies within the
wrestling community which I hope to maintain in the future. I would like to
thank all the folks who have given me so much help over the years, particularly
the three principal typists--the late Arnetta Moore, the superstar for over two
decades, Kim (Fiftyfingers) Manning, and my own first cousin, the long suffering
Nancy Dimitris. And, in addition, I truly have appreciated all my readers and
the many comments (both positive and negative) that they have so often provided.
